A well written slogan or jingle can stick in your head for a long time. If you were to think back over your lifetime, you might come up with a few that stick out. I’m going to list a couple and you guess the product or organization. I’ll give the answers at the end.

  1.        “_______ wobble but they don’t fall down.”
  2.        “Just a little dab’ll do ya.”
  3.        “We’ll leave the light on for you.”
  4.        “Be All You Can Be”
  5.        “Taste the Rainbow”

One of the jingles that I find to be most iconic is for a product that was first advertised in 1922 (that’s right, 100 years ago!). Until the 1970s, this dairy treat could only be found in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Their tagline, launched in 1982 simply asks the jovial question: “What would you do for a Klondike Bar?” Commercials have featured NASCAR drivers maneuvering a child’s battery-operated vehicle around a racetrack while other racers drive by at 200 mph. Another has a guy shaving his eyebrows. Perhaps the most outlandish one of all is a husband ACTUALLY putting his dishes where they belong! The bottom line is that a Klondike bar carries more value than living life by the status quo.

When we read Psalm 84, we find something that carries far more value than a simple ice cream treat: serving the Lord. Verse 10 says, “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.” Similarly, Hebrews 11 tells us that Moses “[chose] rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.”

Could I sell you on a new jingle? “What would you do to spend time with God?” Would you get up early to spend time with God? Would you rearrange your priorities to spend time with God? Would you take a job for less pay to make sure that you could be in God’s house?

The Psalmist told us what he would do: He would be a doorkeeper. The ancient equivalent of a burger flipper. He would give up all pleasure just to be near God. But just like a Klondike bar offers cool refreshment, spending time with God is not without its benefits.

God is a sun and shield. He gives grace and glory. He will not withhold what is best for them that walk uprightly. Sometimes we have a different idea of what is “good” than God. Fortunately, Isaiah 55:8-9 say, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”With all those benefits,

“What would you do-oo-oo to spend time with God?”
