In today’s world of suffering and evil how often do we hear people question God’s authority or even his existence? Even as Christians when things go wrong with our health, relationships, jobs or other unpleasant situations (e.g., unexpected death of a loved one), the tendency is to wonder: Does God know? Does God care? Can God resolve the bad situation? We always need to remember that God not only loves us, but he is also the sovereign Lord who is ultimately in control of our lives. Because of his love for us, he desires the very best for us and his sovereignty can make it happen.

At what point does God begin to reign over our lives? Contrary to the view of many in today’s society, human life begins at the moment of conception. The psalmist vividly escribes this truth in Psalm 139, verses 11-16. Even before we were born, God planned all the days of our lives, and in verse 14 he says that we are ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’. God’s control of our lives not only begins at the moment of conception but extends to the moment of our death and beyond.

For Christians and non-Christians alike the Covid pandemic brought the worry and fear of death to the forefront. As believers we need to bury such worry and fear and take comfort in knowing God has a perfect plan and purpose for each of us. Just like he knew us when we were in our mother’s womb, he also knows the second we will take our last breath. When things happen that don’t seem to make sense or that are above our understanding, we need to take a step back and put our trust solely in God’s sovereignty. God’s sovereignty means that there isn’t anything that will enter our lives that God does not either decree or allow. And nothing will enter our lives that, if we put our trust in him, he cannot
work out for our good. How thankful and comforting to know that God really is in control!
