In times of uncertainty, it is always comforting to know we can turn to an all-powerful God. He wants us to come to Him. All we need to do is pray. If you read Psalms 49-50 together, King David establishes some important truths that carried him through the troubles he faced. It is comforting to be reminded that God owns the world and everything in it, and He will deliver us from our troubles if we call upon Him. “And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.” (Ps. 50:15)

In Ps. 49, David warns all people: earthly possessions cannot save in times of trouble. The unsaved think differently. “Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.” (Ps.49:11) This unjust thinking is folly; they will perish, unable to take any of their present enjoyments with them. This trust in land and riches will not save anyone and in the end those who trust it “…shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.”

In Ps. 50, David focuses on God as our light.  We must put our trust in Him because He owns the world and everything in it. God said, “If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.”  God does not have any worries or problems to solve, and He has no needs.  He wants to solve our problems. As we are right with Him, faithful, and thankful, He will deliver us in times of trouble. We thank (Praise) God that He has the power to deliver us, if we would only remember that He is willing to do it for us!  It is when we forget to ask for His help that we put ourselves in the place of God and say, like the unsaved, “I can do this. I don’t need God to solve this problem.” God’s response: “These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself:…” (Ps 50:21) God is not like us. We are nowhere near His perfect nature.

We read over and over where Israel forgot God and did what they thought was right in their own eyes. The world lives the same way today. Let’s not live this way! We are called to live by faith in God and His Word to remind us of His faithfulness and love.  God desires to show Himself mighty in our lives if we only ask Him to deliver us from everyday problems and the larger needs of the world.  One of my favorite choruses to sing in Sunday school growing up was “He’s Able! He’s able! I know He’s able! I know my Lord is Able to carry me through.”
