Of all the extremities of the human body, feet probably would not be at the top of the list as the most desirable to look at. Perhaps we should consider what our feet can do rather than their appearance. We often use our feet to bring good news to others. As followers of Jesus, we are to be bearers of the “good news” as it is written in Romans 10:15, “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”

Using feet to bring good news about Jesus is depicted several times in the New Testament. In the account of the birth of Jesus in Luke 2 we are told that, after the angels appeared to the shepherds to announce Jesus’ birth, “they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.” Also, in John 20 after Jesus’ resurrection, we read the account of Mary Magdalene going to the sepulchre where Jesus had been buried and found it empty. She immediately ran to Peter and John and told them of the Lord’s disappearance. Peter and John then ran together to the sepulchre and went inside and found only the linen clothes of Jesus. Shortly thereafter, Mary had a physical encounter with Jesus that confirmed that Jesus was risen and indeed alive. We can only imagine her excitement and sense of urgency as described in v.20., “Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.”

God created us to live in a relationship with him. Until we find that relationship, there will always be something missing in our lives. God loves us and wants us to find fulfilment and purpose in that relationship. Faithful worship is what matters most of all. Much of I Chronicles is devoted to King David, who is held up as an example of true worship and faithfulness to God. As revealed throughout the book of Chronicles, not all the people of Israel were faithful. Similarly, today we may feel isolated and alone at times when there appears to be relatively fewer and fewer believers in our society. We should not be disheartened but rather to go on spreading the good news of Jesus.

Using our feet to run often implies a sense of urgency. As believers, may we make it a high priority to heed God’s call to use our feet and go out into the world and boldly tell others of the saving grace of Jesus. Praise the Lord that He has given us feet to run for his sake.
